In the dusts of Iraq, the ruins of the world’s first civilization lie buried.

This episode, we travel into the extremely distant past to look at the Sumerians. These ancient people invented writing and mathematics, and built some of the largest cities that the world had ever seen. Find out about the mystery of their origins, and learn how they rose from humble beginnings to form the foundation of all our modern societies. With myths, proverbs and even some recreated Sumerian music, travel back to where it all began, and find out how humanity’s first civilization fell.

Can't be the earliest city if jericho is 9000 BC before writing and pottery even. Unless he talking about a City of the size and stature of this Sumerian .. unbelievable we still using their system of minutes hours, days etc and 360 degrees amongst others..

While watching this I felt like I was there, living in ancient times, dawn of civilization. I imagined myself walking on the streets of ancient cities baked in sunlight, vibrant and colorful, seeing huge brick walls that became a legend and hearing the stories of ordinary people talking about even older times...

Can you do an episode on the Huns? On their expansion, apex, then fall and disappearance as a people?

35:50 Reason for using base 60 instead of base 10, and why we still divide time by 60 โ€ฆ fascinating.

I need to stop watching youtube when i go to sleep. I just woke up from a nightmare after this cycled in on autoplay. Someone kept attributing a bunch of historical events to 'Sargon of Akkad', the youtube political commentator (Karl Benjamin), in this nightmare. I was like "no no this can't possibly be right" and it felt like it was going on for hours and hours.

When it was mentioned that words for more advanced things came from Sumerian, I was reminded of how many languages use English words for things like computers or occasionally German for scientific phrases. Some things never really change. Fantastic work.

The comparison between clay tablets and smartphones (coupled with the clip of writing in clay AND my stylus phone lying beside me) immediately made me think of the famous cut from '2001: A Space Odyssey' with the bone and the spaceship :D I feel silly, but it fits so well!
