1200 Year old Forgotten Jain Temple at Mountain Top – Kalugumalai, India

August 18, 2019 By

Hey guys, today let’s take a look at this hill called Kalugumalai in India. On top of this hill, there are some of the most beautiful carvings, stone beds and a unique cave. Most people do not visit this part of the hill because it is bushy and these plants have thorns. But if you manage to walk through them, you can find about a hundred and fifty carvings and these are actually very ancient carvings, at least 1200 years old. You can see that these carvings are brilliant and have remained almost completely intact, even after 1200 years. These carvings belong to Jainism. Jainism is a very old religion and it has some of the most advanced spiritual principles and it once was a flourishing religion in India. Today, Jains make up just 0.4% of India. Jainism believes in the attainment of spiritual enlightenment and all these saints you see here are enlightened beings. I have shown you various types of rock cutting architecture in my videos, this is called a relief type architecture. This is a carving technique where the sculpted elements remain attached to a solid background of the same material – in this case the material is granite which is very hard, which is probably why you don’t see much corrosion or degradation. But there is another reason why these figures are so well preserved – you see these rectangular slots above these carvings? Once upon a time wooden doors may have been placed using these slots, to cover these figures. This was a great way to preserve these carvings from rain and shine.
Some of the figures you see are quite fascinating, here you can see this Jain god called Parshvanath who is totally unclad and standing erect. Look at the reptilian Snake God Naga standing above him and completely protecting him. This is a female goddess known as Ambika. The reptilian God and this female deity also occur in Hinduism as well, so both religions do share some common ground. In fact, look at this brilliant Hindu temple known as Vettuvan Koil, it is located in the same hill and is very close to this Jain temple. This temple was created by scooping out the rocks from the hill, starting from top to bottom. This is the same technology used to build Kailasa Temple in Ellora Caves. Now, what is fascinating is that, Ellora caves also has Jain temples close to Kailasa temple just like what we see here. Is this a coincidence or is there a relationship between Jains and this type of architecture? Perhaps researching the history of Jainism could give us better insight into understanding these structures.
The Jain carvings in Kalugumalai have a specialty in them. Under many of the carvings, we can see writings. This is great because we don’t have to do guess work and these writings will give us details about the carvings and even about the lifestyle of people who lived here. This is written in ancient Tamil language which is still the spoken language in this region. The inscriptions tell us that about 8000 Jains lived in this area and women enjoyed an equal, if not superior status to men. Here is another popular Jain figure called Bahubali, he stood in meditation for so long, that creepers and climber plants have completely taken over his body. Jainism preaches deep meditation to attain enlightenment.
Walking around the hill top, I could find several other areas, which have more carvings of Jain Gods, this entire place is very isolated and very peaceful to the mind. It must have been chosen for its location by Jain monks for meditation. So where did the monks sleep? Let us go into this area which is commonly referred to as the area of Jain beds. Jain monks had simple stone beds carved out of rocks and slept in these beds. Initially there was no roof or walls around these beds, but people vandalize this area all the time, so they have built this structure around it now and have kept it locked. This has prevented people from coming in, but has become a safe haven for bats.
So now, we have seen stone beds of the monks and their temple but there is something much more fascinating than these two. Here is a cave which was used by Mahavira himself – Mahavira is the last enlightened teacher of Jainism. Some Jains believe that Mahavira meditated in this cave, which is why this hill top was chosen to build a Jain temple later in time. Today, the cave is completely abandoned – it is just me, and a monkey absorbing the strange vibrations of this holy site.

Buddism, & jainism is part of Hinduism only. . Sariyai , kiriyai , yogam, nyabam...these r the 4 teachings of hinduism. This buddhism n jainism is at 3rd level..a higher level of spirituality in hinduism is to meditate, giv up greed n seek.God within...thats the teaching of Hinduism. Thats d rule of d 3rd level...yogam.n nyanam. Thats why u can see these type of meditation posture in many old temples . But people always mistauen it as Buddha of Jains whn that Temple isself pre-dates buddism n Jainism!! So, maybe this fact can help Praveen.n others to get a better.answer for unsolved ancient History!!

In for all the Westerners pls understand Hinduism thr r two types of so called religions or Dharshana's.. Only true religion is Tri The sanatan Vedic religion which is a proper religion rest all are just dharshans one person realized all others are following.. That's why I call them as just sects, ism's, followers..

    1. Vedic (Shaiva, Pashupati, Samkya, mimamsa, Yoga, Vaishnava, Shakti, Ganapati, Subramanya, Surya, u can even add Saibaba, or more ancient religions like Agni, Indra, varun, mitra, etc) Now the rules of worship etc are in "Agamas"

    2. Non-Vedic (which reject domination of Vedas.. They have a Prophet)
Jain, Buddha, charvaak, Sikh.. Tribal religions who worship non-vedic gods Tantrik schools Etc

Another Non-vedic school Veerashaivam or ligayats who don't accept Vedas but they are worshipping Vedic God and they follow Agamas..

PS: Beautiful thing about Vedic religions is you can question.. Seek answers and reject concept called God and reject ur prophets and find ur own way through as greats like kapila muni, patanjali, Rishabha, Gautama, Adi shankara, ramanuja, basavanna, Guru nanak etc.... They don't behead or Crucify you for questioning thr are no boundaries set rules of worship.. Our God is not insecure.. You can have No God one God or Many God's or many forms of that one God.. Religious freedom is what u have

Peaceful Jain Civilisation once flourished in Indian sub continent which once included Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. However due to the waves after waves onslaught by MUSLIMS Islamic Jihadi invaders with destructive mentality destroyed very large part of Jain Civilisation .It is presently survived now only in INDIA

Reminds me of the Easter island Moai with all the row of deity with the Devine head toppers....the god in front of Naga may well be Naga’s 1/2 Devine 1/2 human son. One of the Titans old history...not myth but real ...notice how they are all giants.

My friend, you are talking of 1200years because of the history lessons in school. India is very very old. Westerners can't understand it. Don't base your discoveries on the western narrative. You are better than that.

Strange how similar these carvings resemble the Moi on Easter island. Anyone else pick up on that? With Jainism being so old, could there be a legit tie between ancient India and ancient Easter island? The "top knot" style hats are virtually identical to the 7 moi that face inland. I've heard that origin myths of the island mention the reason those 7 stand on 1 platform and face inland is bc of their status as gods among men(I could be wrong on the details here). I just find it hard to believe the almost identical "hats" are some bizarre coincidence. πŸ€”πŸ‘½πŸ—ΏπŸ—ΏπŸ—ΏπŸ—ΏπŸ—ΏπŸ—ΏπŸ—ΏπŸ€·πŸ½β€β™€οΈ
